Why Your Garage Door Is So Loud, and What Actually Fixes It

There is a bedroom over your garage and you have started coming home in neutral. Here is what makes the noise, in the order worth spending money on.
The Noise Is Rarely the Opener
Almost everyone starts by looking at the motor on the ceiling, because it is the only part that obviously does anything. But the opener does not lift the door, the springs do, and it does not make contact with the track, the rollers do.
Work through the cheap items first. Plenty of doors never need a new opener at all.
One: Steel Rollers
Most doors ship with steel rollers. Ten steel wheels running inside a steel track, with the track bolted to the framing and doing a passable impression of a speaker.
New, they are merely loud. As the bearings wear the wheels start to wobble, and instead of rolling they scrape along the inside of the track. That is the rumble you hear through the ceiling.
Sealed nylon rollers replace them. Nylon on steel is quiet. The sealed bearing does not need greasing and does not fill with grit. And because they turn freely, the opener has less to fight on every cycle.
If you do one thing, do this one.
Two: Everything That Has Worked Loose
A garage door hinges and flexes several thousand times a year. Fasteners loosen, and every loose fastener rattles against the panel it is supposed to be clamping.
Going through the door and tightening hinges, brackets, bearing plates and track fasteners takes half an hour, costs almost nothing, and removes a layer of noise most people have stopped noticing because it came on gradually.
Three: The Right Lubricant in the Right Places
This is where well-meaning DIY makes things worse.
Lubricate the torsion spring lightly, so the coils are not grinding as they wind. Lubricate the bearing plates at each end of the shaft, which squeal when dry and are the most commonly missed part on the whole door. Lubricate the hinge pivots. Leave sealed rollers alone.
Do not lubricate the track. The track is a running surface, not a bearing. Oil on it collects dust and grit and turns into a grinding paste that wears the rollers you just paid to fit.
Four: The Bang at the Bottom
If the door hits the floor with a thump rather than settling onto it, that is not a noise problem, it is a balance problem.
Pull the manual release and lift the door by hand to waist height, then let go. A correctly balanced door stays roughly where you put it. If it drops, the springs have lost tension and the opener has been compensating, which means it is also wearing out faster than it should.
That is a repair rather than a tune-up, and it is worth doing regardless of noise, because every slam loads every hinge and bracket on the door.
Five: Now Look at the Opener
With the hardware sorted, whatever is left is the motor.
A chain drive is a metal chain over a metal sprocket. There is a limit to how quiet that becomes. A belt drive does the same job through a reinforced rubber belt and is noticeably quieter for a residential door.
A wall-mount unit is the real answer where a bedroom sits directly over the garage. It mounts on the wall beside the torsion bar, so nothing is hanging from the joists that form that bedroom floor. It also clears the ceiling completely, which is useful if you want storage overhead.
A Word on What Noise Means
It is tempting to treat noise as cosmetic. It usually is not. Grinding is a bearing failing. Squealing is something dry that should not be. Banging is a balance problem loading the whole door. A door that suddenly got louder is telling you something changed.
Quieting a door by fixing what makes the sound leaves you with a door in better condition than it was. Quieting it by buying a smoother motor leaves the worn parts exactly where they were, running behind a quieter machine.
What It Costs, Roughly
Rollers, hinge tightening and correct lubrication together sit in the low hundreds and handle most complaints. A belt drive opener is several hundred more. A wall-mount unit is more again, and worth it in the specific case of a room directly overhead.

A Five Minute Test Before You Call Anyone
Worth doing yourself, because it tells you which of the five items above you are dealing with.
Open and close the door once and stand inside, away from the opening, and listen for where the sound is loudest. A rumble that follows the door up the track is rollers. A squeal from one fixed point near the top of the opening is a bearing plate. A rattle that comes and goes is loose hardware. A single bang at the end is balance.
Then pull the manual release and move the door by hand, slowly, the whole way up and down. With the opener out of the picture you hear the door itself. If it is noisy by hand, no opener will fix it. If it is silent by hand and loud under power, now you are looking at the motor.
Finally, look at the rollers as the door moves. A roller in good condition spins. A worn one skids along the track without turning, and once you have seen the difference you cannot unsee it.
Do Not Ignore a Sudden Change
Gradual noise is wear. Sudden noise is a part that has failed or is about to.
A new grinding sound, a bang that was not there last week, or a door that has started shuddering partway up are all worth a call rather than a wait. The cheapest version of every garage door repair is the one done before the failure takes something else with it, and on a door under spring tension that matters more than on most machines around a house.
