Roller and Hardware Quieting

The Cheap Half of a Quiet Door

If there is a bedroom over your garage, this is the visit that fixes it, and it does not involve buying an opener.

Rollers

Most doors leave the factory with steel rollers running in a steel track. Metal on metal, ten wheels of it, with the track acting as an amplifier. As the bearings wear the wheels start to wobble and scrape rather than roll.

Sealed nylon rollers with shielded bearings replace them. Nylon on steel is quiet, the sealed bearing needs no greasing and does not pack with grit, and the wheels stay true. On most doors the change is immediate and obvious.

There is a second benefit. Free-running rollers reduce drag, so the opener does less work on every cycle.

Hinges and Fasteners

A garage door flexes at every hinge, thousands of cycles a year. Fasteners work loose, and every loose one rattles against the panel it is bolted to.

Going through the door tightening hinges, brackets, the bearing plates and the track fasteners is unglamorous and takes about half an hour. It removes a surprising amount of noise, and it stops small movements becoming worn holes.

Lubrication, Done Properly

The wrong product in the wrong place makes things worse, so this is worth being specific about.

What This Does Not Fix

If the door bangs hard at the bottom, that is balance and spring tension, and it is a repair rather than a tune-up. If the opener itself is a chain drive, it will still be a chain drive, though it will be running a much easier door.

We will tell you which of those is left when we finish.
